William George "Bill" Pepper (* 2nd quarter 1895 in Faversham , † October 25, 1918 in Mesopotamia ) was an English football player .

Career

Pepper played as a goalkeeper for Sheppey United in the Kent League before he was used as a test player for Leicester Fosse in a friendly against Gillingham FC in early February 1913 . In the 2-0 win, in which the Swedish international Karl Gustafsson also ran for Leicester for the first time, Pepper was praised by the press for "proving to be supportive" and "giving a very satisfactory performance". Just a week later he made his debut in the Football League Second Division for Leicester instead of regular goalkeeper Fred Mearns . The game at Leeds City ended, however, with a 1: 5 defeat. In April he was scheduled for the last home game of the season against Burnley FC , but had to cancel his appearance on match day and was replaced by Harry Furr . In the autumn of 1913 he appeared briefly for Gillingham, in addition to an appearance in the Southern League , when he was used instead of long-time regular keeper AV Bailey in a league game against Southend United (final score 4: 2) in September 1913 , he also played several times for the reserve team in the South Eastern League .

Professionally, Pepper worked as a bottle washer in a mineral water factory in Faversham. During World War I he served in the rank of Lance Corporal in the Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment . He was killed during fighting on the Mesopotamia front on August 25, 1918, a few days before the Moudros armistice . His name can be found on the Basra monument .
