Bill Sutherland (physicist)

Bill Sutherland (born September 14, 1943 in Sedalia , Missouri ) is an American theoretical physicist.

Sutherland studied at Washington University in St. Louis with a bachelor's degree in 1963 and at the State University of New York at Stony Brook , where he received his master's degree in 1965 and his doctorate in 1968 with CN Yang . He was a post-doctoral student at the University of California, Berkeley . From 1971 until his retirement in 2004 he was a professor at the University of Utah with a full professorship since 1982.

He dealt with precisely solvable models in statistical mechanics and quantum mechanical many-body theory. The precisely solvable Calogero-Sutherland model (also named after Francesco Calogero ) is a one-dimensional many-particle system with repulsive Coulomb forces between the particles.

In 1967 he generalized Elliott Lieb's solution to the six-vertex model and in 1970 he dealt with the eight-vertex model. Both are two-dimensional grid models. The six-vertex model was originally introduced to model the thermodynamic properties of water ice, the eight-vertex model is an extension of this without the restrictions of the ice model.

For 2019 he received the Dannie Heineman Prize for Mathematical Physics with Francesco Calogero and Michel Gaudin . He is a fellow of the American Physical Society .
