Yellow Waters Billabong in the Northern Territory , Australia

Billabong is a term used in Australia from the Aboriginal language for a body of water , such as a seeping river arm or a waterhole in a river that fills with water in the rainy season like a wadi and dries up more or less strongly during the dry season . Since a billabong is usually only one of the few water sources in the closer region and often carries water longer than the watercourse itself, it is visited by humans and animals alike.

The billabong is also mentioned in Banjo Paterson's famous folk song Waltzing Matilda . Both a board game that involves going around a lake with a kangaroo and an Australian fashion company are named after the term.
