Billwil

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Billwil is a village belonging to Oberbüren along the Thur in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen . Billwil is made up of Vorderbillwil and Hinterbillwil (formerly Vorderer Billwil or Oberer Billwil and Hinterer Billwil or Unterer Billwil ).

Billwil is located north of the Thur along the municipal road between Oberbüren and Niederhelfenschwil . Since 1904, the Thur Bridge, designed by Robert Maillart in collaboration with Pflegehard and Haefeli , has connected Billwil with Oberbüren, which is on the opposite side of the Thur. Billwil is located directly under the dump on which the St. Gallenberg Monastery is enthroned a little further west . Hinterbillwil borders the Niederbüren golf course in the east . Billwil has nine registered buildings.

The place was first mentioned in 818 as Pillinwilare , farmstead of Bilo (Old High German for sword , diminutive Bilîn). The family name Billwiller, documented since 1419, probably comes from this place.
