William Daro "Billy" Bean (born May 11, 1964 in Santa Ana , California ) is a retired American baseball player . Billy Bean played in Major League Baseball as an outfielder from 1987 to 1995 . He began his career in MLB with the Detroit Tigers , where he played from 1987 to 1989. In 1989 he moved to the Los Angeles Dodgers , from 1993 to 1995 he played with the San Diego Padres .
In 1999, Bean came out and wrote a book about his life as a homosexual baseball player called Going the Other Way: Lessons from life in and out of Major League Baseball . Billy Bean is the second Major League Baseball player to come out after Glenn Burke . Billy Bean is a board member of the LGBT organization Gay and Lesbian Athletics Foundation .
In 2002 he appeared on the sitcom Frasier . In 2012 he wrote and produced the short film Without a Mom .
Bean now works as a real estate agent in Miami Beach .
