Billy Boston

Billy Boston (born August 6, 1934 in Cardiff ; full name William John Boston ) is a former Welsh rugby league player.

Life

Boston played for Wigan Rugby League Football Club in England between 1953 and 1968 , where he scored 478 attempts and 7 goals. He played 31 test matches for Great Britain, where he scored 24 attempts for the rugby league "Lions". Before ending his career in 1970, he also played a few games for Blackpool Borough.

He grew up in Tiger Bay in Cardiff. His father was a sailor from Sierra Leone and his mother was a native of Ireland .

As a 19-year-old, after just six games in the rugby league, Boston already went on tour with the British team to Australia and New Zealand. On this tour, he scored 30 attempts (90 points) in just 13 games.

Boston also played in rugby union in Wales for Neath RUFC. Boston still lives in Wigan today, where he owns a pub.

Honors

  • In 1988 he was honored in the Rugby League Hall of Fame as one of the best players of the 20th century.
  • In 1996 he received the MBE for "Services to the City of Wigan ".
