Abimbola "Bim" Afolami MP (born February 11, 1986 in Crowthorne , Berkshire ) is a British politician . He belongs to the Conservative Party .

Since 2017 he has represented the constituency of Hitchin and Harpenden in Hertfordshire in the House of Commons .

biography

Afolami was born to doctor Samuel Afolami and his wife Bassey Afolami in the ceremonial county of Berkshire. His father is from Nigeria . Afolami was educated at Eton College and University College in Oxford , where he studied modern history . During this time he served as the librarian and vice president of the Oxford Union . After completing his studies, he worked as a lawyer in the law firms Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer , Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP and at HSBC .

Afolami is the father of two sons, is a football and rugby fanatic and is a fan of Arsenal FC and the Northampton Saints club . Afolami is a member of the Royal Society of Arts .

Political career

Afolami names David Cameron , Rory Stewart and William Hague as his political role models . The main concern is the reform of the British education system .

In the British general election in 2015 , Afolami ran as a Conservative candidate in the Lewisham Deptford constituency against Vicky Foxcroft MP of the Labor Party . However, it only got 14.9% of the vote. Afolami was selected as a candidate for the Conservative Party in the constituency of Hitchin and Harpenden prior to the 2017 British general election , succeeding MP Peter Lilley, who was no longer running . Afolami was elected as a member of the House of Commons with 53.1% of the vote.

Originally an opponent of the UK's withdrawal from the EU , Afolami later campaigned for the implementation of the 2016 EU membership referendum in the UK . He supported both the exit agreements negotiated by Theresa May and Boris Johnson . He dedicated his first maiden speech in June 2017 to education policy.
