The beetles reach a length of 2.4–2.8 mm. The basic color of the beetles is brown-black to black. The pronotum is colored pale yellow on the side edge. The elytra have a larger pale yellow shoulder spot and an almost touching central spot. In the back third, a band also runs over the wing covers, which ends just before the wing cover seam. In addition, the end of the elytra usually has a pale yellow color.
distribution
The sponge beetle is widespread and common in Europe. The species is the only one of the genus Litargus that occurs in Central Europe.
