The Federal Biological Research Center for Agriculture and Forestry (BBA), based in Braunschweig and Berlin, was a higher federal authority and research institution within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection . In addition to the two main locations, the BBA had institutes in Darmstadt , Kleinmachnow , Bernkastel-Kues , Münster and Dossenheim near Heidelberg. At the end of 2005 around 630 employees were working at the various facilities.

On January 1, 2008, the BBA was merged into the Julius Kühn Institute - Federal Research Institute for Cultivated Plants .

tasks

The areas of responsibility of the Federal Biological Research Center for Agriculture and Forestry were laid down in the Plant Protection Act and the Genetic Engineering Act.

Some of the priorities were:

  • Work on the biology of harmful organisms
  • Development of new plant protection methods
  • Evaluation of plant protection products in terms of effectiveness, plant tolerance and benefits
  • Testing and approval of plant protection equipment
  • Coordination of plant protection in organic farming
  • Assessment of the risks associated with the release of genetically modified organisms

In connection with the reorganization of consumer protection by the German federal government in 2002, the Federal Biological Institute was withdrawn from the authorization of plant protection products and transferred to the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety .
