Biomechatronics

Biomechatronics is the development and improvement of mechatronic products and processes using biological and medical knowledge.

Biomechatronics works in an interdisciplinary manner. The subject includes, in particular, aspects of robotics , measurement , regulation and control technology , biomedical technology, biomechanics , human-machine interactions and rehabilitation measures as research subjects .

In contrast to the sister sciences (functional morphology, clinical biomechanics, sports biomechanics, bionics ), in biomechatronics the question and application of the scientific results are equally in the hands of technology .

This results in two directions of action for the subject:

  • The application of mechatronic systems on the human organism, but also their application in other living systems
  • The derivation of design ideas for technical systems from biological models

The first German professorship for biomechatronics was established in 2002 at the TU Ilmenau (chair holder Hartmut Witte). In Germany, the University and University of Applied Sciences Bielefeld jointly offer the M.Sc. Biomechatronics. At Ulm University of Applied Sciences, a research group of the same name cooperates with the local university clinic and the University of Central Lancashire .

Objects of investigation in biomechatronics are for example:

  • Development of intelligent systems to support and restore defective functions of the human body (intelligent orthotics and prostheses )
  • Procedure for objective therapy control
  • Microtechnical tools for minimally invasive surgery
  • Development of technical movement systems based on biological models
  • Optimization of technical processes based on a biological model
  • Development of cascadable drives based on a biological model
