The Bionorica SE is an exploratory, medium-sized German manufacturer of herbal medicines based in Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate . In December 2018, the company had 1,700 employees worldwide, around 1,000 of them in Germany.

The company was founded in 1933 as Bionorica GmbH. Since March 2010 it has been a European stock corporation . The chairman of the board is Michael A. Popp, board member for marketing and sales Uwe Baumann, board member for finance Michael Rödel, board member for product supply Hanke Wohlers. The chairman of the supervisory board is Eberhard Rauch.

In the 2018 financial year, the company's net sales amounted to EUR 337.9 million. Sinupret and Bronchipret are among the company's best-known brands . A new market segment has been entered in the field of hemp preparations, with the production of dronabinol Bionorica is one of the leading manufacturers according to its own information.

On May 2, 2019, it was announced that Bionorica had sold its cannabis business to the Canadian company Canopy Growth Corporation for EUR 225 million .

history

The company was founded in 1933 by Josef Popp, the grandfather of the current owner, Michael A. Popp. The headquarters of the then Bionorica GmbH was Nuremberg . One of the first products was Sinupret, which is still one of the most important preparations in the portfolio today. In 1945 the pharmacist Erna Popp (1918–2017) and the doctor Hans-Oskar Popp (1924–2017) took over the management of the company. At this time, the industrial production of the preparations was also set up. After the company moved to Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate , Michael A. Popp took over management of Bionorica AG in 1989. In March 2010, Bionorica AG was converted into a European stock corporation, Bionorica SE.

Products

The company sells phytopharmaceuticals and homeopathic medicines in the areas of indication for respiratory therapies , depressive moods , blood circulation , gynecology , urinary tract , liver protection , sleep disorders and rheumatic complaints . The company's brands include Sinupret , Bronchipret, Imupret N (formerly Tonsilgon), Tonsipret, Rinupret, Canephron, Silimarit, Agnucaston, Klimadynon, Mastodynon, Allunapret, Assalix (currently withdrawn from the market).
