Biotoecus is a genus from the cichlid family (Cichlidae), which occurs in northern South America in the central Amazon basin (catchment area of the Rio Negro ) and in the Orinoco basin . The name was probably given under the assumption that the fish are mouthbrooders ( Gr .: "bios" = life, "oikos" = house).
features
Biotoecus species are 4 to 6 cm long. They look like young fish from other species of cichlid, are brownish to bluish and partly transparent. There is always a spot on the gill cover , spots on the flanks are not always visible. The extremely long tail stalk makes them appear very elongated.
Biotoecus species live in shallow, calm water over muddy bottoms or over fallen leaves. They are cave or pit spawners. The clutch, which can contain up to 200 eggs, is looked after by the female, while the male defends the territory ( male-mother family ).
