Birgit Lutz

Birgit Lutz (* 1974 in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz ) is a German writer and expedition leader who reached the North Pole 15 times .

Life

After training as a journalist and while working for the Süddeutsche Zeitung , Birgit Lutz specialized in arctic topics. She was at the North Pole a total of 15 times ; In 2010 and 2011 she reached the pole on skis with the Swiss expedition leader Thomas Ulrich , started from the Russian drift ice station Barneo. In 2013 she crossed Greenland on skis . She was then made a Fellow of the Explorers Club New York .

Her first two books are about her North Pole and Greenland tours. She wrote a third book together with Thomas Ulrich about the fatal outcome of his attempt to cross the polar sea on skis in 2006. For her fourth book about life in East Greenland today, she spent several months in the Ammassalik region of East Greenland .

Lutz works on various expedition ships as an expedition leader and guide in Spitzbergen , Franz-Joseph-Land and Greenland. Since 2016 she has been involved in a Citizen Science project for the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven, in which beaches are cleaned and data is collected about the garbage found. In 2017 she co-authored an article about this project in the "Marine Pollution Bulletin".

Lutz gives lectures in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and on ships in the Arctic about her expeditions, books and her engagement against plastic waste.

She lives on the Schliersee .
