The Birkenhead River is a 53 km long left tributary of the Lillooet River in the Canadian province of British Columbia .
The Birkenhead River rises on the northeast slope of Chipmunk Mountain , 30 km north of Pemberton in the southern Pacific Ranges , at an altitude of about 1,850 m . It initially flows 20 km in a south-easterly direction through the mountains. The Taillefer Creek , drain the eastern Birkenhead Lake empties into the river. This then flows 8 km in a south-southeast direction before turning south and finally reaching the Pemberton Valley at the settlement of Mount Currie . There it flows another 10 km along the northern edge of the valley in an easterly direction. The British Columbia Highway 99 (Pemberton - Lillooet ) crosses the river immediately before its confluence with the Lillooet River, a few meters above its confluence with the northern end of Lillooet Lake . The Birkenhead River drains an area of approximately 600 km². The mean discharge is 12 km above the mouth at 23.9 m³ / s. The highest monthly outflows usually occur in June.
The river was named in 1858 by Alexander Caulfield Anderson of the Hudson's Bay Company after the ship HMS Birkenhead , a British troop carrier that sank off South Africa on February 26, 1852.
