Birmingport , also known as Port Birmingham , is a place in Jefferson County in the state of Alabama in the United States .

geography

Birmingport is located in central Alabama in the southern United States, a few kilometers east of Bankhead Lake and directly on its tributary Locust Fork . Birmingport is about 50 kilometers south of the 733 square kilometers William B. Bankhead National Forest .

Nearby locations include Sylcvan Springs (5 km southeast), Maytown (9 km east), Adamsville (11 km east), and Mulga (12 km east).

history

The name is made up of Birmingham and port (German: Hafen ). The place received it because it served as a fresh water connection for nearby Birmingham at the time of its foundation . In 1920, at the same time as the Port of Birmingham Company built the place , a post office was opened. In 1986, Birmingport was incorporated into the city of Birmingham, making the latter a port city . Today, because of its location on the waterway, Birmingport is of great importance for the city and region, as it forms a direct waterway into the Gulf of Mexico via the Black Warrior River , the Tombigbee River and the Mobile River .
