Until the End of All Days (original: The Pact ) is a novel by the American author Jodi Picoult from 1998. The German translation is by Cécile G. Lecaux.

action

The book begins with the violent death of young Emily Gold. She was found with a head injury while her partner Chris Harte held her in their arms. Beside them lay the gun that was from his father's gun safe.

In a subsequent flashback , Picoult introduces the befriended families Harte and Gold from New Hampshire , whose children have been inseparable since birth and later become lovers. While visiting a restaurant together, they learn that Chris has been hospitalized with a head wound. Emily was also accepted there; however, she is already dead when her parents arrive.

Chris reports of a planned double suicide that failed because he lost consciousness. But the evidence that speaks against him is mounting. The autopsy reveals that Emily could not have self-inflicted the head injury and was also pregnant. As a result, it is clear to her mother that Chris murdered her so as not to obstruct his future. The prime suspect he is in custody and his parents hire a lawyer. Little by little he finds clues for Emily's depression and suicidal intentions.

In numerous flashbacks, the reader gradually learns what really happened. During the trial , the entire case is rolled up, which surprisingly ends when Chris takes the stand and tells the truth.

Background and film adaptation

"Until the end of all days" is one of the first works by Jodi Picoult. Only later in the story does Picoult go into the prehistory of the main characters in their plot. Here the reader receives additional information that the protagonists in the novel do not know until the end. The individual persons are described down to the smallest detail so that the reader can easily identify with them.
