The Episcopal Palace on Bischofsplatz in Mainz was hit by a bomb in 1942, during World War II . In 1962 a parking garage was built in its place.

history

The building was erected between 1663 and 1666 in the form of the late Renaissance by cathedral custodian Johann Georg von Schönborn, the eldest brother of the Mainz elector Johann Philipp von Schönborn , as a cathedral curia. Today's Bischofsplatz was created in front of the palace by demolishing the houses there. Until 1857, however, the square was still called Domkustorie-Platz. From 1802 the bishop of the newly circumscribed diocese of Mainz, Joseph Ludwig Colmar, resided here .

After being hit by bombs in August 1942, the building burned down. The Südgiebe, which was still standing, was demolished in the immediate post-war years and the remains were removed in 1962 in favor of a new car park. Due to the great architectural value, however, the sandstone portals were built beforehand. The main portal was given a new location in the Bockshöfchen, another portal was set up at the north end of Domstrasse. In 1993, as part of the redesign of the Bischofsplatz, the garden portal was built at the historic location using largely original sandstone parts. Special features of the Episcopal Palace were the high gable roof between two volute gables , as well as the two gables above the main and garden portal. The roof and gable as well as the floor plan showed the model of the Roman emperor who had been erected a few years earlier on Liebfrauenplatz .

So far, several attempts by the citizens of Mainz to reconstruct the facade of the building have failed.
