The Bishop's Palace in Meißen is the former residence of the bishops of the Meißen diocese in Saxony . Together with the Meissen Cathedral and the Albrechtsburg Castle, it shapes the cityscape and is used by the Meissen District Court .

history

The residence of the bishops has been located on the southeast corner of the castle hill since the 10th century . Nothing is known about the exact shape in front of the large new building from the late Gothic period. In the passage from the cathedral square to the bishop's court there are still massive Romanesque pillars that indicate the existence of a gatehouse in Romanesque times. The round tower (Liebenstein) on the southeast corner of the castle hill, which has a major impact on the cityscape, is also dated to the high Middle Ages . It was covered with a slate-covered, curly hood , which adds to the unmistakable overall appearance of the castle hill. The late Gothic new building was started under Bishop Johann V. von Weißenbach (1476–1487), but only completed under Bishop Johann VII von Schleinitz (1518–1537). The building has been used by the district court since 1837. Then an east wing was built in a similar neo-Gothic shape according to plans by G. G. Krüger. In 1912 a renovation took place under Volkmar Ihle. The structure was extensively renovated in 1995 and 1999 and from 2002.

architecture

The multi-storey building was previously only connected to the Liebenstein by a narrow wing. Two storeys with a gable roof rise above three-storey barrel-vaulted cellars, which indicate that the structure was pushed out over the plateau of the castle hill. Irregular rows of windows with partly coupled arched curtain windows structure the exterior.

The building shows several ogival portals towards the courtyard. The portal to the stairs is highlighted by the coat of arms of Bishop Johann V. von Weißenbach. Next to it is the portal of the so-called official steps, which lead through the building to the palace courtyard. There are also arched curtain windows in the Liebenstein round tower , and there is a two-storey bay window at the southeast corner. On the ground floor, rich cell vaults have been drawn in over strangely nested rooms ; the rooms on the upper floor have mostly been disfigured by renovations.

The gatehouse between the bishop's castle and the southern transept of the Meissen Cathedral was built under Bishop Johann VIII von Maltitz (1537–1540), whereby the Romanesque gate was built over two to three storeys. On the west side there is a portal in Renaissance forms from the time of construction with the coat of arms of those of Maltitz in the apex. A stone tablet with reference to Emperor Charles V is placed in the passage . A coat of arms from the Electorate of Saxony from the 18th century can be found in the eastern gate .
