Johann VIII von Maltitz
Johann VIII von Maltitz (* in Dippoldiswalde ; † November 30, 1549 at Stolpen Castle ) was Bishop of Meißen from 1537 to 1549 .
Johann VIII came from the von Maltitz family . His father Sigismund was a ducal Saxon councilor, court marshal and bailiff of Schellenberg . Wendischbora and Colmnitz belonged to him . John VIII was a cousin of his predecessor, John VII, and was most recently a coadjutor at his side.
As a bishop, Johann VIII resisted the spread of the Reformation , but the sovereign Duke Heinrich “the Pious” , who has since converted to the new faith, celebrated the first Protestant service in the cathedral in Meissen in 1539 .
His epitaph in Meißner Dom is known from drawings around 1750. An almost identical epitaph was in the town church of Stolpen .
