Bischofswarder is a now uninhabited island in the Großer Plöner See in the Schleswig-Holstein district of Plön . It is located on the eastern shore of the lake north of the municipality of Bosau , to which it belongs, and separates the Bischofssee from the rest of the Plöner See. The treeless island is about 500 meters long and up to 250 meters wide. It is flat and has a maximum height of 24 meters above  sea level , so that it is only up to three meters above the lake level. Bischofswarder is only separated from the lake shore by a 50 meter long and rather shallow sound .

The island takes its name from the Oldenburg bishop Vizelin , who ran the missionary work of the Slavs from Bosau .

Slavic castle complex

In the north of the island there are the remains of a Slavic castle and settlement. Small remains of the castle or ring wall , which was probably built on the peninsula in the 8th century, can still be seen. Inside the castle, the archaeologists found evidence of bronze, iron and horn or bone processing. The finds also include horseshoes and a few weapons. Dendrochronological studies have shown that the settlement was established as early as the 8th century. The castle itself was built between 837 and 870 and was abandoned again around 900.
