Domenico Corri (born October 4, 1746 in Rome , † May 22, 1825 in London ) was an Italian composer , impresario , music publisher and singing teacher .

Life

He received his musical training, especially singing, from Nicola Antonio Porpora in Naples . In 1781 he moved to Scotland, where he achieved great success as a singer and singing teacher, especially in Edinburgh . He soon took over the organization at the Theater Royal in Edinburgh and organized concerts for the artistic elite in Edinburgh. However, his attempts to gain a foothold in the opera business were in vain.

In 1770, after the premiere of his opera La Raminga Fedele , he met Edward Burney in Rome; he helped him to gain a foothold in Britain. He moved to London around 1790 and began publishing vocal compositions in Soho . Together with his son John Corri and the musician James Sutherland, he opened a music publishing company with offices in London and Edinburgh. When Sutherland died in 1790, however, the music publisher was closed. In 1794 he let it revive for a short time together with his son-in-law Johann Ladislaus Dussek . However, the publisher went bankrupt again after a short time; Dusik, whose wife Sophia Dussek had given birth to their daughter Olivia Francisca shortly before , left London for Hamburg and Domenico was arrested.

After his release from prison, Corri was also manager of Vauxhall Gardens in London; In 1806 he wrote his most successful opera The Travelers : From 1820 onwards his condition worsened inexorably until his death.

His attempt to find a new solution to the music arrangement, which he deals particularly with in his work A select Collection of the most admired songs, duets, etc. , is also of particular importance .

Four of his children later also embarked on a musical career: Sophia Giustina Corri (born 1775), later married Dušik and in their second marriage Moralt , Philip Anthony Corri (around 1784–1832), Montague Corri (around 1784–1749) and Haydn Corri ( 1785-1860).
