features
The species is stocky with a short head slightly offset from the neck. There are two color variants: a monochrome brown with a light yellow underside and an orange-brown-black with striped, banded or spotted pattern. In both varieties, the head is black-brown to black with an occasional light spot behind the eye. Adult animals are darker in color than the young and reach a body length of 95 to 174 cm.

The fourth to sixth of the nine to twelve supralabial shields touch the edge of the eye. Infralabial shields are 12 or 13 available. The trunk has 24 to 39 rows of scales , 245 to 267 ventral shields , 45 to 54 mostly paired sub-caudal shields and an undivided anal shield .
Distribution and way of life
