Ludwig Trutnau (born July 13, 1935 in Essen ; † July 8, 2015 in Altrich ) was a German biologist , author and nature photographer . His books Snakes in the Terrarium. Volume 2. Poisonous snakes (1998) and snakes in the terrarium. Volume 1/2. Non-toxic snakes (2002) are considered standard works of German-speaking terrarium science.

Career

After studying at the Gutenberg University in Mainz and a short-term position at the Duisburg Zoo , he did his legal clerkship . As a teacher of biology and chemistry he worked for a long time at the Cusanus-Gymnasium in Wittlich / Rhineland-Palatinate . In 1999 he retired as a senior teacher .

Ludwig Trutnau dealt with herpetology for more than forty years . He was particularly interested in snakes and crocodiles. On several trips he explored the habitats of reptiles and amphibians in southern Europe, North Africa, Southeast Asia, as well as North, Central and South America.

His work European Amphibians and Reptiles (1975) is one of the first, most extensive identification books of European herpetology in German, which many authors like to quote from nature guides when describing amphibians and reptiles. The precise species descriptions were taken into account when creating the identification keys for amphibians and reptiles in the "Brohmer Fauna of Germany".

Ludwig Trutnau was also known as an animal and nature photographer. Many of his pictures are published in herpetological books and specialist journals.
