The Bismarck Bridge

The Bismarck Bridge is a road bridge over the Saar in Saarbrücken and is a listed building. The bridge extends Paul-Marien-Strasse in the St. Johann district , crosses the Saar and ends in a roundabout. Here you can drive on the A 620 or turn to Alt-Saarbrücken (right) or St. Arnual (left). On the St. Johann side, the Staden park begins at the bridge , on the other side of the Saar is the Bismarck park , which was built between 1910 and 1920 and is now part of the Staden ensemble.

The Bismarck Bridge was built from 1913 to 1915 according to plans by Paul Meissner . Originally the bridge was built of stone, after the destruction in World War II it was rebuilt as a reinforced concrete bridge with sandstone cladding. As originally, the bridge was built with a large arch over the Saar and smaller round arches on the land side in the south.

As part of the light installation “Flusslicht” by Martin Fell, a spotlight was installed on the bridge on both banks of the Saar in 2017, which illuminate the Saar in the evening so that the light is reflected on the underside of the bridge and forms waves there.
