The Bismarckstein in Badbergen

The Bismarckstein in Badbergen is a memorial to the German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck . The main boulder is the original width stone from Schwagstorf near Fürstenau . It was inaugurated in 1910 and is still unchanged today in its original location in front of the sexton of St. George's Church .

location

The Bismarckstein is located on the main street in Badbergen, directly in front of the gable of the Küsterei of the Protestant St. George's Church. Until the completion of the bypass road in December 2013, Bundesstraße 68 ran along the street in front of the monument . Opposite the monument, Bahnhofstrasse leads in the direction of Nortrup and Groß Mimmelage .

Along with the Bismarck Tower in Bad Rothenfelde, which was demolished in 1979, and the Bismarck window in the Fürstenau St. George Church, it is one of the few Bismarck monuments in the Osnabrück region .

history

The main stone with a bronze plaque

In 1909, the decision to erect a Bismarck monument was made in Badbergen. Many years earlier, on April 1, 1895, a Bismarck oak was planted in Badbergen for Otto von Bismarck's 80th birthday in his honor. The monument committee approached Bergmann, the brickworks owner in Ankum, to hand over a boulder from his lands. The choice fell on the Breiten Stein , which was located near Schwagsdorf in the heather area of the crib field.

The transport, which could only be mastered with great challenges, was later published in a series of pictures. After several days of transport, the stone reached Badbergen on November 19, 1909. On the way, the team of horses in Ankum- Aslage got stuck on a slope and had to be pushed out of the nearby brickworks by 20 men. In the village of Ankum , the car got stuck with its wheels in the pavement, which resulted in a one-day break.

Before it was removed, the stone was an important landmark and served as a meeting point for the Dutch people . Due to its exposed location, a prehistoric place of worship was suspected, but this has not yet been proven by archaeological finds. This sparked an intense dispute between the Badbergers and the Füstenauer, who demanded the return of the stone. Even the former Prussian agriculture minister from Nortrup Ernst von Hammerstein-Loxten was asked to campaign for the stone to be returned. Ultimately, all efforts were fruitless and the stone remained in Badbergen.

The Holskenhus of St. George's Church, which was demolished for the construction of the monument, was located in the place where the monument was placed. Here the visitors could put their wooden shoes before entering the church. The unveiling of the stone was celebrated on Friday, April 1st, 1910 with a festival day. The Bersenbrück District Administrator Robert Klauser gave the keynote address.

In 2018, the monument, which was now completely overgrown with ivy, was exposed again.
