The Bismarck tunnel in the Harz is a 187 m long, single-tube, disused and walled-up railway tunnel of the Rübelandbahn (formerly Harzbahn ) near Rübeland in the Harz district , Saxony-Anhalt .
Geographical location
The disused Bismarck tunnel is located in the Lower Harz in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt nature park . It is located about one kilometer east of Rübeland on the Rübelandbahn between Hüttenrode and Rübeland. Bundesstraße 27 runs almost parallel to the tunnel .
History and description
The Bismarck tunnel was pierced on April 1, 1885 as part of the construction of the Harz Railway, later Rübeland Railway. Since Otto von Bismarck's birthday was on the same day , the tunnel was named after him. There is also a bust of Bismarck above the northeast portal. As early as 1931, the tunnel was made redundant, closed and walled up with the construction of the Hüttenrode - Rübeland section via the Kreuztal viaduct.
