The Kreuztal Viaduct, also known as the Krockstein Viaduct, in the Harz is a 99 m long, almost 30 m high, single-track railway bridge of the Rübelandbahn (formerly Harzbahn ) near Rübeland in the Harz district , Saxony-Anhalt .

Geographical location

The viaduct is located in the Lower Harz in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park . It is located about 1 km east of Rübeland . It spans the Kreuztal, a side valley of the Bodetal , and the B 27 .

History and description

The Krockstein Viaduct was built in 1930/31 as part of the construction of the Hüttenrode –Rübeland section of the Rübelandbahn. It is a Gerber girder bridge with four fields on three central supports. The middle fields are between 23 and 27 m wide. The bridge is considered the largest railway bridge in the Harz Mountains. In the direction of Hüttenrode, the road gradient is 2.85%. The bridge lies between two tunnels : the 90 m long Nebelholz tunnel joins in the direction of Rübeland, and the Krumme Grube tunnel with a length of 307 m in the direction of Hüttenrode .
