Bismarck Tower (Katowice)
The Bismarck Tower in Katowice was an observation tower that was built in 1903 on Beatenhöhe in the Südpark as a memorial to Otto von Bismarck . The 20 meter high tower was demolished in 1933.
The Katowice Bismarck Tower was built according to a design by the architect and building trade school director G. Meyer and financed for the most part by the Old Gymnastics Club in Katowice . The inauguration took place on August 30, 1903. An imperial eagle and a portrait medallion by Bismarck were attached to the entrance side of the tower.
After the transition from East Upper Silesia to the Polish state, the tower was a bitter reminder of the former Prussian-German colonization efforts in the region. After the building was initially renamed in 1925 after the Polish national hero Tadeusz Kościuszko , it was demolished a few years later on an initiative of the voivod Michał Grażyński ; demolition began on August 22, 1933.
