The Bismarck tower Hasselfelde-Trautenstein was a Bismarck tower on the Carlshaushöhe near Hasselfelde in the Harz district , Saxony-Anhalt . It was one of two Bismarck towers that were made entirely of metal.

history

The construction of the Bismarck Tower was initiated by the Harz Club on July 30, 1899, after a predecessor of this tower, a wooden structure called the Karlshausturm, collapsed in November 1898. He had stood at the same point on the Carlshaushöhe 626 m above sea level. The new tower was made by the Carl Reinsch machine factory in Dresden . The Harz Club and various branches of the Harz Club bore the costs of 3,641.37 marks.

The inauguration of the tower took place on May 19, 1901. In 1924 the medallion with which the tower was adorned was stolen and replaced with a replica. In 1926 the 25th anniversary of the tower was celebrated, in the 1950s a wooden scaffolding was attached to the tower to mark a trigonometric point . In 1960 the tower was closed to visitors, as the platforms would have allowed a view of the Federal Republic of Germany. The tower has now been used as a fire watch tower and has been renamed. It was now called Karlshausturm or Carlshausturm like its predecessor. The Carlshaushöhe was declared a military protection zone in the late 1970s and in 1981 was equipped with a radar station for the Soviet army's missile defense. In the same year, recruits of this army severed the tower with flame cutters. The former protection zone was not open to the public until the Soviet Army withdrew in 1993. The area was then administered by the Federal Property Office. In 1998 it was transferred to the Trautenstein municipality. In the same year a new tower was inaugurated there, which in turn was named "Carlshausturm". This tower with a height of 50 m and two platforms was made of steel. The cost was 2.3 million DM.

description

The Bismarck Tower had a square floor plan, a height of 20 meters, four intermediate platforms and a round viewing platform that was secured with a chest-high railing. It was built in open steel construction and had no lighting equipment. Eugen Kircheisen designed the Bismarck medallion, which was cast in bronze in the Rinckleben foundry workshop and found its place above the first platform. The inscription read: “To the memory of Bismarck in German loyalty. The Harz Club Braunschweig ”.
