Located in France , the diocese of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne (Latin Dioecesis Maurianensis ) with the bishopric in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne was founded in 576 by King Gontran of Burgundy . It was a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Vienne . In 794 Maurienne became the suffragan seat of the Archdiocese of Tarentaise , but under the primacy of Vienne.

From 1802 to 1825 the diocese of Maurienne was temporarily dissolved in the course of the French Revolution and the diocese was incorporated into the Archdiocese of Chambéry . On August 7, 1825, Maurienne was re-established as an independent diocese, but now belonged to the ecclesiastical province of Chambéry in the Kingdom of Sardinia . On April 26, 1966 it was incorporated into the Archdiocese of Chambéry together with the Diocese of Tarentaise and thus ended its existence.

In 1948 the bishopric of Maurienne had about 42,000 Catholics in 89 parishes . These were looked after by 215 diocesan priests , plus 180 religious sisters . It had a size of 2,090 km². The Saint-Jean church in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne was the cathedral of the diocese.
