history

As early as 1780, court junker Johan Henrik af Geijerstam expressed in an academic treatise the possibilities of building a better traffic connection between Filipstad and Vänern . One of the projects worth mentioning was the canalisation over the Timsälven from Bofors via Degerfors to Gullspång . But his suggestions were not heard.

The original plan of Nora – Karlskoga järnväg provided for the construction of a branch line into the industrial area. This plan was later changed. Now the plans envisaged the construction of a 2.14 kilometer long canal that led through the lakes Lonn and Alkvettern. This canal began at Timsälven, which forms the southernmost part of the Bergslag Canal as far as Karlskoga, and led from the mill near the Bofors train station. There a siding from the train station connected the harbor square on the canal bank.

The concession for the construction was granted on January 3, 1873. The contracts for the canal construction had already been signed a year earlier with a construction cost of 5,000 pounds per English mile .

The canal opened in March 1874. It was rarely used and was later replaced by a siding. The canal still exists today, but there is no longer any maintenance or scheduled traffic. In order to contain the vegetation in the overgrown canal, carp were placed in the canal.
