The Black Mountain Range is a mountain range in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
The Black Mountain Range is located between the East Two Thumb Range and the West Valley of the Rangitata River . In the north the mountain ranges border the Alma Spur and the Rocky Ridge and in the south the Brabazon Range .
The approximately 12 km long mountain range, which runs in an arc from west to south-east, culminates in the west with the 2540 m high High Peak , whereas the namesake of the mountain range, the Black Mountain, only has a height of 1809 m . Numerous creeks and streams of the mountains lead their waters to the Rangitata River flowing eastwards .
Administratively, the Black Mountain Range belongs to the Timaru District .
Conservation Park
The Black Mountain Range and the surrounding mountain ranges are part of the Te Kahui Kaupeka Conservation Park , which is administered by the Department of Conservation .
