The Black Stump (English for Black Stump ) is a striking, albeit low mountain in the north of the East Antarctic Victoria Land . It rises 7 km southeast of Monte Cassino in the Freyberg Mountains . The summit is made of andesite , so the mountain is probably the remains of an ancient volcano .
It got its descriptive name from the New Zealand geologist P. J. Oliver, who examined the mountain between 1981 and 1982 as part of the New Zealand Antarctic Research Program .
