The Blackbird - violin , even Blackstone violin called, is a playable, made of stone violin full size. It was built by the Swedish artist Lars Widenfalk according to plans by Antonio Stradivari , but with small modifications to make it playable. The violin is named after the blackbird (Turdus merula) because of its black color . The artist is not himself a musician; the idea appealed to him. It is the first playable violin of its kind, and there are now two more made of marble by the Czech sculptor Jan Řeřicha .

The materials used are a piece of magmatic diabase for the violin body and neck. Another stone from the diabase was used for the back. The ceiling is only 2.5mm thick. The web is made of mammoth - ivory ; a particularly yellow piece was chosen, matching the namesake; the fingerboard is made of ebony

The stone violin was first played in 1992 at the Expo 92 in Seville, Spain , and in the same year it was blessed by Pope John Paul II in the Vatican . It has since been played around the world, including in Luxembourg , Monza , Milan , Nuremberg , Oslo , Prague , Stockholm and Washington .
