The Blagoveschensky Bridge ( Russian Благовещенский мост Blagoveschenski most , formerly Russian Мост Лейтенанта Шмидта Most Leitenanta Schmidta , German , 'Leutnant-Schmidt-Brücke' ) crosses the Neva in Saint Petersburg .
The Blagoveshchensky Bridge was the first permanent bridge over the Neva. It connects Vasilyevsky Island with the city center.
Names
The bridge was built from 1843 to November 12, 1850 under the project name Nevsky Bridge ( Невский мост / Newski most ). From November 12, 1850 to 1855, it was called Blagoveschensky Bridge ( Благовещенский мост / Blagoweschenski most ). After the death of Nicholas I , it was renamed the Nikolai Bridge ( Николаевский мост / Nikolajewski most ) in 1855 . The bridge was renamed after the revolution in 1918, after which it became the Leutnant Schmidt Bridge ( мост Лейтенанта Шмидта / most Leitenanta Schmidta ) in honor of Pyotr Schmidt . Following extensive renovation measures, the bridge was reopened on August 14, 2007 as the Blagoveschensky Bridge.
