The bright-winged lichen bear ( Nudaria mundana ), also known as bright-winged , rock-bright-winged or dwarf lichen moth , is a butterfly ( moth ) from the subfamily of bear moths (Arctiinae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 19 to 23 millimeters (17 to 22 mm). They have light gray to parchment-colored wings that are slightly transparent. On the forewings there are two dark-gray to brown-gray, slightly faded zigzag bands that are differently pronounced depending on the animal and between which there is a dot of the same color near the edge of the wing. A very blurred, dark area can be seen near the anal angle. Discal mark and transverse lines can be completely extinguished. The hind wings are the same color as the forewings, but have no markings.

The egg is spherical and yellow in color.

The caterpillars are gray in color and have two rows of protruding yellow spots on their backs. They are gray haired.

The pupa is greenish white or yellowish and translucent. The dark eye spots stand out clearly. The back has two rows of dark spots.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The animals occur in northern and central Europe to the east as far as Turkey . They live mainly on fallow land with rocks and walls that are overgrown with lichen and in other damp places with lichen vegetation. In the mountains they rise to the tree line. A kind of rare occurrence that lives as a caterpillar on rock lichens. However, it cannot be described as hygrophil in the narrower sense: Findings are rock-interspersed, light deciduous forest slopes that are very dry, sunny and warm during the day, but are covered by a pronounced cold air lake or cold air stream with high humidity at night.

Way of life

The bright-winged lichen bear forms one generation per year, whose moths fly from late June to early August. The moths are nocturnal. They often sit on rocks and tree trunks. However, the males are much more active than the females. They also often fly into artificial light sources at night. The caterpillars are found from September and after wintering until June of the following year. The caterpillars feed primarily on algae that grow in shady areas on rocks, but also on lichens and liverworts . They live on stones and rocks that are overgrown with their forage plants. They pupate under stones or on lichen in an open, web-like web. Often there are several webs lying close together. In the Alps , the egg is the wintering stage.
