The bluefish ( Badis badis ) is a species from the family of Badidae . It occurs in the Ganges and its tributaries in India , Nepal and Bangladesh , in the Mahanadi , in the lowlands of Assam as well as in Pakistan and Bhutan . The species is an ornamental fish on which a number of behavioral research experiments have also been carried out.
features
Blue bass can reach a length of up to 8 cm. The species has numerous red and blue spots with a reddish-brown basic color. In addition, there is a noticeable black spot above the base of the pectoral fins and several dark spots along and along the base of the dorsal fin . The dorsal fin has 15 to 17 hard and 7 to 10 soft rays. The pectoral fins usually have 12 soft rays, the anal fin has six to eight soft rays. There are 26 to 28 ribs.
Way of life
The species lives individually in flowing waters, ponds and water ditches. It lives mainly in open water and feeds on worms, insects and crustaceans. The 30 to 100 eggs are laid in nests after mating with a conspicuous dance, which are guarded by the adult animals.
Systematics
The blue perch was previously assigned to the family of sea bass (Nandidae) and two subspecies were distinguished. However, the subspecies Badis badis burmanicus is now regarded as a separate species Badis ruber .
