The blue armored catfish ( Corydoras nattereri ) is a freshwater fish native to southeastern Brazil . Its distribution area extends from the state of Espírito Santo to Paraná . There it occurs in the Rio Doce , in the Rio Jequitinhonha and in the Rio Paraíba do Sul . The species was named after Johann Natterer , who collected the type specimens .

features

Female blue armored catfish reach a maximum size of 6.5 cm, while males stay a little smaller with a length of 5.5 cm. The blue armored catfish has a typical Corydoras shape and a simple, blue-gray to brownish basic color. The belly is light to whitish. A blue-black longitudinal band begins behind the gill cover and extends over the sides of the body above or on the overlapping zone of the two rows of bone plates and ends at the base of the tail. A brown-black spot is located below the powerful, first dorsal fin ray. The fins are transparent and shimmer yellow. The upper row of bone plates on the sides of the body has 21 to 23 plates, the lower 20 to 21.

Reproduction

Females of the blue armored catfish lay around 30 to 50 relatively large eggs (ø 2 mm) per clutch, from which the young fish hatch after around five days and swim freely after another two days. The fry are already 2.5 to 3 cm long after three months.

Systematics

The blue armored catfish belongs to the Corydoras paleatus species group, which will likely be separated from Corydoras in the future and assigned to a new genus.
