Blaze Foley

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Blaze Foley (born December 18, 1949 in Malvern , Arkansas ; actually Michael David Fuller , † February 1, 1989 in Austin , Texas ) was an American singer and songwriter.

Life

Foley grew up in West Texas. He and his family performed in a gospel band called The Fuller Family . He lived in a tree house in Georgia and later moved to Austin to pursue a career as a songwriter. His idiosyncratic character caught the eye even in this city known for nonconformists. He slept with friends and on billiard tables in bars. His replacement home was the Austin Outhouse music club .

Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard recorded his song "If I Could Only Fly" in 1987.

In 1989 he was shot dead by Carey January, with whose father - Concho January - he was friends, after an argument at his friend's house. There are contradicting statements about the exact course of the dispute.

Music and lyrics

Foley's songs are characterized by openness and strong emotionality. They range from love songs to satirical political commentary. Although he was in the studio three times, none of his albums were released during his lifetime. The master tape of his first album was stolen from his car. The finished records of his second album were confiscated by the FBI (or DEA ) because the producer was involved in drug deals. The recordings for his third album were lost after a fire in the studio.

Companions

Foley's musical companions included Townes Van Zandt and Calvin Russell .

Quotes about Foley
