Lead Street (Stralsund)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lead Road is a city street in the city 's Old Town in Stralsund . It connects the Neuer Markt with the Marienstrasse and is crossed by the Kiebenhieberstrasse . The lead road is part of the core area of the UNESCO World Heritage with the title Historic Old Towns Stralsund and Wismar .

The street was first mentioned in 1307 and got its name from the bliden called projectiles, which were used to defend the city. The bullets were kept in the blyden house ; this house was on the corner of the new market and lead street and gave it its name. The meaning blide later disappeared and was replaced by lead in parlance ; the projectiles actually had nothing to do with this metal.

In the explosion of a powder tower on Knieperwall in December 1770, almost all of the surrounding houses, including the one on Pencil Street, were damaged or destroyed. A large part of the houses that can be found there today therefore date from the 19th century.

Eight of the buildings are under monument protection (see also the list of architectural monuments in Stralsund ), namely the houses on lead street 1 , lead street 2 , lead street 2a , lead street 4 , lead street 5 , lead street 9 , lead street 13 a , lead street 14 ; Until it was demolished in 2006, the house was also located at 15 Pencil Street .

Today's house numbers were assigned in the 19th century. From 1900 to 1960 the Stralsund tram drove through the lead road . The street is designated as a one-way street .
