Bletsoe Castle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bletsoe Castle is the ruins of a late medieval fortified manor house in the village Bletsoe in the English county of Bedfordshire .

history

John Pattishall had Bletsoe Castle built. In 1327 he received the royal license to fortify an existing mansion on the eastern edge of Bletsoe (English: License to Crenellate). Pattishall had inherited the manorial estate around 1313, but after his mother's death in 1324 he inherited additional lands, allowing him to seek royal permission to fortify it. The castle was the birthplace of Margaret Beaufort, Countess of Richmond and Derby , whose son was later crowned King Henry VII . Your year of birth is uncertain; it is said to have been either May 31, 1441 or May 31, 1443.

At the end of the 16th or beginning of the 17th century, a new building was built around the old castle. It was square in plan and had three or four stories and gable windows. Most of this later building was later demolished, leaving a much smaller building that still contains parts of the old castle and sits within the medieval earthworks .

Today the ensemble is a Scheduled Monument and English Heritage has it as Historic Building II *. Grade listed. The medieval moat has a diameter of 130 meters, is on average 18 meters wide and 2.4 meters deep. It is partially filled with water, but its southern section was destroyed when agricultural buildings were built over the moat.
