Blizzard Island is an island off the George V coast in the Australian Antarctic Territory . It belongs to the Mackellar Islands off Cape Denison in the Commonwealth Bay and is located northeast of Lassesen Island .
They were discovered by participants in the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911–1914) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson . The island is named after a sled dog puppy born on the research trip. This in turn was named after the weather conditions with which the expedition participants were confronted at Cape Denison.
