Lassesen Island is an island off the George V coast in the Australian Antarctic Territory . It belongs to the Mackellar Islands off Cape Denison in the Commonwealth Bay and is north-northeast of Lesser Mackellar Island .
They were discovered by participants in the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911–1914) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson . The island is named after a sled dog donated to the expedition by the Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen , who bore the same name as one of the dogs that accompanied Amundsen and four other men to the South Pole in 1911.
