The block 10 is a 1967 bricks built residential building in the city at that time Halle-Neustadt . It is the largest residential building in the GDR .

location

Starting near the central thoroughfare An der Magistrale , the building extends in a north-south direction between the districts of Westliche Neustadt and Südliche Neustadt. Opposite the central and southern part of the block is the “Gastronom” (retail and small business) built in GDR times as the central supply facility of the residential complex.

Construction of the building

In 1965, the Halle-Neustadt panel factory, which was officially called VEB Prefabrication Halle and belonged to the Halle housing association, was built specifically for Germany's largest new construction city, Halle-Neustadt . Block 10, consisting of 23,000 elements, was built between January 20 and July 31, 1967.

Scope and usage

The ten-story building is 380 meters long and consists of 320 multi-room and 536 one-room apartments. At its peak, the building had around 3,000 residents. A roof garden was laid out, some rooms expanded into a day nursery with 160 places; a nursing home was set up at the south end. To save pedestrians long detours, three passageways were created in the building.

designation

The building erected as “Block 10” (nickname: White Giant) was given block numbers 618 to 621 after further expansion of the district. Since the fall of the Wall , the address has been Zerbster Straße 25–43.
