Blood Rage is an area control game with drafting elements, which was released in 2015 by Eric M. Lang and published by CMON Limited . It was first funded through Kickstarter.com and then put on the market.

Theme and equipment

In Blood Rage, players take on the role of a Viking clan and try to gain control of different areas in order to plunder them and thus get a place in Valhalla next to Odin . To achieve this, players ally themselves with gods, recruit mystical creatures and fight against other players.

In addition to the instructions, the game material consists of:

  • 1 game board
  • 1 era board
  • 1 Valhalla board
  • 4 clan boards
  • 99 cards
  • 9 pillage tokens
  • 8 Ragnarok indicators
  • 16 clan indicators
  • 4 victory point indicators
  • 1 starting player marker
  • 1 doom token
  • 1 age tile
  • 1 leader figure, 10 warriors and 1 boat per clan
  • 44 small plastic bases
  • 8 large plastic bases
  • 6 monster figures

Style of play

To prepare for the game, the game board is placed in the middle of the table. The cards are divided into 3 age piles. If there are fewer than 4 players, some cards are sorted out and then shuffled. Depending on the number of players, a certain number of areas are lost at the beginning of the game, which cannot be entered during the game. Then an area is randomly determined which will go under at the end of the 1st Age.

Phases per round
  • Gifts of Gods (draft cards)
  • Actions
  • Discarding the cards (except for one)
  • Quests
  • Ragnarok
  • Return from Valhalla

Now each player receives 8 cards and chooses one card to keep. He passes the remaining 7 cards clockwise to the next player and from these the next player chooses another card and passes the rest on (drafting). This is repeated until each player has 6 cards in hand. The remaining cards are put away and have no meaning for the rest of the game. The possible types of cards are upgrade cards, battle cards, and quest cards.

Now the starting player is determined who can take an action. To do this, he has to pay the corresponding anger costs. If a player is no longer angry, he can no longer take an action, even if it would not cost anger. Then it is the next player's turn. The players take turns taking actions until everyone has passed or their anger is used up. The possible actions are:

  • Invasion (placing pieces on the playing field)
  • Marching (moving any number of figures from one area to another)
  • Upgrade (play one of the drafted upgrade cards)
  • Quest (play a quest card)
  • Loot (Loot an area. If there are enemy units there will be a fight)

If two players fight against each other, the fighting strength of their characters in the contested area is added. In addition, each player involved in the fight can play a fight card. If the player who used the loot action wins, all of the loser's pawns are sent to Valhalla and the winner can take the reward tile. If the defender wins, only the loser's pawns are removed, without being allowed to take the reward tile. In addition, the loser receives his battle card back. At the end of each age an area goes under. Units standing in this area are sent to Valhalla and the owner receives victory points for this. Afterwards, all players get back the pieces that came to Valhalla in this round.

The game ends when the third age has been completed. Then the player with the most victory points wins. Victory points can be earned by winning battles, completing quests, losing units in the Ragnarok, for certain clan upgrades and by improving clan values.
