The blood-breasted bearded bird ( Lybius vieilloti ) is a species from the African bearded bird family . The specific epithet " vieilloiti " bears the blood-breasted bearded bird in honor of the French ornithologist Louis Pierre Vieillot .
The species occurs in Africa north of the equator. Several subspecies are distinguished. The IUCN classifies the blood breasted bearded bird as not endangered ( least concern ).
Appearance
Blood breast bearded birds reach a body length of about 15 centimeters. The males of the nominate form have a wing length of 7.7 to 8.7 centimeters. The tail is between 4.2 and 4.7 inches long. The beak length is 1.8 to 2.1 centimeters. Females have similar body measurements. There is no noticeable sexual dimorphism .
Both males and females have red faces and red chins. The top of the head is finely spotted red in most individuals, in some individuals the spots are also yellow. This spot can also be found on the throat and chest. The neck is black, the throat white with red feather tips. The back is black, the feathers have white-yellow spots on the back, the rump is yellow-brown and the upper tail-coverts are yellow. The control feathers are brown and have yellowish seams. The belly is yellow, the middle of the belly is finely spotted with red. The beak is slate-colored, the featherless skin around the eyes is gray. The eyes are yellow, orange, or brown. The feet are black-gray to dark brown. Young birds are similar to adult birds, but have significantly less red in their plumage.
The distribution area of the blood-breasted bearded bird partially overlaps with that of two other tooth-bearded birds. The blood-breasted bearded bird is very easy to distinguish from both species: The white-headed bearded bird has a white head and is slightly larger. The purple mask bearded bird has predominantly black body plumage.
Distribution area
The distribution area of the blood-breasted bearded bird extends from the southwest of Mauritania , Senegal , the south of Mali , the south of Niger , the south of Chad , Sudan and the northwest of Ethiopia to Sierra Leone , Liberia , the southeast of the Ivory Coast , Ghana , Togo , Benin , Nigeria , southern Cameroon , the Central African Republic and the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo . In West Africa, its range is shrinking due to increasing deforestation.
Way of life
The blood-breasted bearded bird inhabits open woodland, tree-lined grassland or forest-grassland mosaics, bushland, forest edges and cultivated land. It is observed in flocks of up to six birds. On trees he searches both the branches of the tree tops and the tree bark for food. Its food spectrum consists of fruits and berries as well as insects.
Blood breast bearded birds are cave-breeders who use tree caves that have been chopped up. The troops often use a tree cave to rest, so that up to six individuals rest in a cave. Presumably they are territorial birds, but their territory is very large. The clutch consists of two to three white eggs. Details of reproductive biology are unknown. The little honey indicator is a nesting parasite of this bearded bird.
