The Crimson Orchid ( Dactylorhiza cruenta ) belongs to the genus of orchids ( Dactylorhiza ) in the family of orchids . It is often regarded as a subspecies of the flesh-colored orchid (syn. Dactylorhiza incarnata subsp. Cruenta ). The main difference to this are the many blotches flowing into one another on the top and bottom of the leaves and bracts of the blood-red orchid. It is a perennial , herbaceous plant, the flowering individuals of which reach heights of between 15 and 40 centimeters. Contrary to what the name suggests, the flowers are pink to purple in color, but not blood red.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 40.
Distribution and location
The plant can be found in Central and Eastern Europe ; the distribution extends from Europe to northwestern China. This species is found in low moors with soils rich in limestone or alkaline . In the Alps it is a character species of the Caricetum davallianae from the association Caricion davallianae.
