Blyxa echinosperma is a species of the frog-bite family (Hydrocharitaceae).

description

The stems are shortened. The leaves are arranged in a basal rosette, band-shaped, 10 to 20 (rarely up to 40) centimeters long and 4 to 7 millimeters wide. They have 7 to 9 veins and a pointed end. The spathe are green, 2 to 5 inches long and 2 millimeters wide. Their stem is slender and 2 to 12 inches long. The flowers are bisexual. The sepals are green, linear, about 6 millimeters long and 1 millimeter wide. The petals are 1 to 1.4 inches long and 0.5 to 0.8 millimeters wide. The three stamens are 4 to 6 millimeters long. The ovary is narrow, cylindrical and 3 to 7 inches long. The stylus are 0.6 to 1.5 inches tall. The fruits measure 4 to 7 centimeters. The 30 to 50 seeds are spindle-shaped or oblong-spindle-shaped and measure 1.5 to 2 × approximately 0.8 millimeters.

The species blooms and produces fruit from June to October.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 42 or 74.

Occurrence

Blyxa echinosperma grows in rice fields and canals. The species occurs in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Vietnam, China (Anhui, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hebei, Hunan, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, South -Shaanxi, Sichuan, Zhejiang), Taiwan, Korea and Japan as well as Australia.

Systematics

The species was first described in 1873 by Charles Baron Clarke as Hydrotrophus echinospermus . Joseph Dalton Hooker introduced it in 1888 as Blyxa echinosperma in the genus Blyxa . Synonyms are Blyxa aubertii Richard var. Echinosperma (CB Clarke) CDK Cook & Lüönd , Blyxa bicaudata Nakai , Blyxa cerato semen Maximowicz ex Ascherson & Gürke , Blyxa shimadae Hayata and Blyxa somae Hayata .
