The Bošnjačka mahala ( Cyrillic  Бошњачка махала , Albanian  Lagjja e Boshnjakëve ) is a multi-ethnic district of Mitrovica in Kosovo . It is located in the northeast of the city center, on the northern side of the Ibar River , making the Bošnjačka mahala part of North Mitrovica .

The Bošnjačka mahala got its name after the Bosniaks , a Muslim and Slavic-speaking ethnic group. Nevertheless, this part of the city was ethnically mixed and inhabited by Albanians and Roma , among others . During the Kosovo war , the Bošnjačka mahala was almost completely destroyed and only rebuilt very provisionally after the war. Currently the few remaining Albanians form the majority in the neighborhood.

The Ibar mosque ( Albanian  Xhamia e Ibrit , Bosnian Ibarska džamija ), which belongs to the Bošnjačka mahala , was built in 1778, was burned down by Serbs in April during the Kosovo war and completely destroyed with an excavator in May. It was located on the outskirts of the district right next to the central main bridge of Mitrovica, which today separates the northern and southern parts from each other. On the morning of June 25, 2017, for the first time in 18 years, a Muslim prayer and call to prayer was held on the site of the former mosque , attended by hundreds of believers.

Today the image of the Bošnjačka mahala is shaped by numerous kiosks and small traders who offer everyday items such as household goods and clothing, as well as bakeries and hairdressers. People from both the northern and southern parts of Mitrovica come to the neighborhood to do their shopping. That is why the Bošnjačka mahala is considered a kind of everyday meeting point or place of encounter between Albanians and Serbs as well as other minorities in the city. Furthermore, the district with Mitrovica's eastern bridge, which connects the Bošnjačka mahala with the industrial area further east, is an important transition zone between the two halves of the city, especially in times when the main bridge could not be crossed due to the tense security situation.
