North Mitrovica ( Serbian Северна Косовска Митровица North Mitrovica , Albanian Mitrovica e Veriut or Mitrovicë Veriore ) is a name for the northern part of the city of Mitrovica , which is part of the northern Kosovo belonging municipality North Mitrovica is. The city of Mitrovica is divided by the Ibar into a northern, mainly Serbian-speaking, and a southern, mainly Albanian-speaking part. From an administrative point of view, these two districts have also been independent municipalities since 2008. 29,460 people, mostly Serbs, live in North Mitrovica. Around 72,000 people live in South Mitrovica, which is much larger in area.
history
On January 16, 2018, the Serbian-Kosovar politician Oliver Ivanović was shot dead by strangers in front of his party's headquarters in North Mitrovica.
The corona pandemic reached North Mitrovica on April 4, 2020. The first COVID-19 cases are confirmed. Emergency and civil protection organizations are reporting up to 16 cases and one death in the Serbian community.
